ITEA Antelope Valley Chapter
2007 Membership BBQ
The local Antelope Valley Chapter of ITEA conducted
it Annual Membership BBQ and elections for 2008/9
Officers. The event was catered by Rattlers BBQ
(Santa Clarita) and held on-base at Edwards AFB.
This annual event is a combined member’s appreciation/membership drive. We have door prizes for
the members, recap the year's activities, introduce the next year's officers, and announce the officers-
elect for the following year. The event is free to all members and guests.
The event was well attended by 105. Over 40 membership applications were handed out.
Tim Chalfant, the outgoing president, thanked his officers and staff for an excellent year.
Over the year we conducted eight luncheons, 12 Board meetings, and the largest Workshop in ITEA.
Luncheon topics included an overview of Sequoia and Kings Nat’l Parks, and an update on attracting a
4 year University to the High Desert. We were also blessed with great presentations from the AFFTC
History office on the Flying Wings and the Archaeology of Muroc. Special topics included the Air Force
Flight Test Center's Dr. Ka’ilwai on Enterprise T&E, & DOT&E. Dr. McQuery on DOT&E Challenges,
Professor Meyers from the Nat’l Executive Security School on Leadership, and Air Force Material
Command’s Mrs. Westgate frank discussion on Professional Careers. The 11th Annual
Instrumentation Workshop co-sponsored with the China Lake Chapter was a resounding success.
Over 300+ attendees, 42 exhibitors, and 38 papers, made it the largest ITEA event short of the national
Symposium. Via this Workshop we raised over $17,000.00 for the Chapter’s Grants program.
A very impressive year from an impressive slate of officers!
Gary Johnson, the Vice President, did a stellar job filling in for Tim Chalfant during his frequent
absences and planned an awesome luncheon schedule with a mix of community, historical, and
executive topics.
Abbe Reuter did a fantastic job serving as the Treasure keeping our books straight and the Chapter in
the black. Between the luncheons, website development, Workshop, and grants program, the Chapter
appreciated Mrs. Reuter’s sound judgments and ability to keep it all straight.
Nick DeMarco, the Secretary elect for 07/08, stepped in after Lorene Garrett resigned from Federal
Service to pursue a new career. Nick picked up right where Lorene left off with meeting minutes and
records keeping. Lorene and Nick did a fantastic job keeping our tasks on schedule and documenting
our events.
Our Sergeant-At-Arms is tasked with maintaining Board meeting professionalism, keeping order in the
luncheons and general meetings, providing security at the Workshop, and fining those who violate the
unwritten code of ethics and intelligence we try to keep. JP Deckert had to leave early and Rich Pigman
did a good job stepping in early from his 07/08 elected position. Thanks Rich and JP!
Our final elected position is our Grants Coordinator. Mrs. Thressa Ward did a stellar job putting
together the grants program this year. She solicited proposals, formed an evaluation team, selected
the winners, and awarded the checks to 2 local High Schools in a very professional manner. Our
grants effort is one of our most important efforts. Over the last 10 years of this effort we’ve awarded
over $110,000.00 dollars to local schools to promote engineering and science. Thressa’s efforts were
greatly appreciated!
We cannot leave the year without special thanks to our support staff and Sean Dobbin. Sean keeps us
on-course and her knowledge and expertise is critical to the success of the Chapter. Mrs. Dobbin is
the glue that holds our chapter together!
A Special Award (see picture) was presented to Mr. Dave Bond for his support of the AV Chapter. Mr.
Bond helped us to schedule Center VIP visitors (Like Dr. McQuery, "& Mrs. Westgate) for ITEA
luncheons and help us plan the upcoming 2008 Instrumentation Workshop. Mr. Bonds help, advice,
and assistance were much appreciated!
The outgoing 2006/2007 Officers wishes the 2007/2008 Officers Good Luck! We will be pleased to
support the new President, Rey Garza, and his equally impressive fellow officers; Vice Pres: Sean
McMorrow, Treasure; Ben Castillo, Secretary; Nick DeMarco, Stg at Arms; Rich Pigman, and Grants
Coordinator; Annette Weisenel. We are also pleased to see our Chief of Staff, Sean Dobbin, continue
in her vital roll and Cheryl Smith to come on board as our Publicity Chairman. We look forward to an
exciting year for AV ITEA!
We also announced the 2008/2009 Officers elect. These folks will “shadow” the current officers and
take the reins in Oct 2008. Please welcome Sean McMorrow (President), John Ward (Vice President),
Wanda Nishitomi (Treasurer), Becky Morris (Secretary), Doug Warren (Stg-At-Arms), and Angel Guilloty
(Grants). Congratulations on your election!
The BBQ ended with the normal ITEA “Odds and Ends” door prizes with everything from ITEA Bears,
shirts, hats, mugs, and brief cases being offered.
